In 2017 I created a series called DECONSTRUCTED. The composition for that series was inspired by my years working in the NY fashion industry and I used tailoring patterns as the foundation of my compositions for those paintings. In 2020 I created the Subway Sonnet Series, drawing inspiration from surfaces I remember from NYC (the graffitied subway cars and sticker-covered pay phones of the 80s).
STITCHED embodies both of these and is a natural progression.
Here I continue with the familiar geometric abstraction of the previous series, using tailoring patterns to explore shapes and juxtaposition. Combining ink transfer techniques and digital manipulation of pop art and other images, I create a second composition that overlaps the drawings of the tailoring patterns. The textured ground of the artwork resembles both the marks commonly found in tailoring and the intricate lines of nautical maps, evoking a sense of journey and discovery. Within this rich tapestry, you'll find words, phrases, lyrics, and sonnets, as if they were a roadmap guiding you on an endless adventure.
To finish, the work is varnished, and then cold wax is applied and buffed. This protects the surface but also gives an interesting encaustic-like quality. it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.
